Watch an AI train itself in Super Mario Bros. 2 live

March 30th

The above video is a livestream of an AI training itself to complete the final lost level of Super Mario Bros. 2.

The livestream is on LuigiI/O's YouTube channel, where contributor Akisame says they've been streaming for two years. The AI has been training inside the current level, the last of the lost levels of the game, for over a month.

"In smb1 and smb3 it takes on average 4-6 days," Akisame said in the livestream chat. "Smb1" and "smb3" are Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3, respectively.

The AI is built on a Neurological Evolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT) algorith, a genetic algorithm developed in 2002.

"It mimics evolution in in its ability to learn," Akisame said.

AKisame is a PhD student.

"I do make AIs for my work from time to time," He wrote. "Usually they are quite a bit more complex than this one haha. This is my side project."
