The world's most powerful text generator has been repurposed into a dungeon crawler text game
GPT-2, the text generator so powerful its developers first decided not to release it, has been repurposed into an endlessly explorable text-based dungeon crawler.
Nick Walton, who created other text games using smaller releases of GPT-2, built AI Dungeon 2 using GPT-2's full release, theoretically making this game more flexible and interesting than his previous experiments.

Imagine an infinitely generated world that you could explore endlessly, continually finding entirely new content and adventures. What if you could also choose any action you can think of instead of being limited by the imagination of the developers who created the game? This is the vision of AI Dungeon 2.
I am continually amazed at how effective this AI dungeonmaster is. Even though it wasn’t trained on any Harry Potter or Star Trek games, the AI can draw on its past internet training and argue with you over who got sorted into which Hogwarts house, or have Klingons show up when you’re captaining the USS Enterprise (it will tend to lose track of who’s the captain, though). In one scenario I set up, which quickly became one of my favorites, the human player is trapped on a spaceship with a glitchy AI and has to try to talk their way free.

AI Dungeon 2 is the latest of a handful of old-school text-based exploration games built on top of GPT-2, OpenAI's ultra-powerful AI text generator. Earlier in 2019, a PhD student named Nathan Whitmore created an exploratory game using GPT-2 that he said he trained using 1970s-era games like Zork.
The former research lab recently completed a landmark deal: $1 billion in funding to develop artificial general intelligence, the field's holy grail.
